In the year 2040, America faces divide. Terrorist assaults, racial conflicts and political opportunists threaten its very survival. A riveting, thought-provoking tale, Melting Point 2040 explores the human costs of an America growing apart – following intertwined lives of a young Mexican immigrant, a disconnected survival gaming fanatic, a University professor and others competing to resolve disputes on their terms. It’s a different world. America’s economic supremacy has been surpassed. Computer programs drive cars that shape around passengers. English is no longer the primary language in several of 52 states. With a second Great Depression embedded in the nation’s mindset and many issues unresolved for generations, America’s most divisive challenge since the Civil War is coming to full boil. America’s future may depend on a reluctant hero.

Melting Point 2040 America Faces Divide Mike Bushman 9780988336902 Books

Michael Bushman has followed his first book, Melting Point 2040, with another gem- Succession 2041. Read them both! As the first book comes to an end, America is on the verge of civil war, a consequence of policies we see being put in place today. In this book, the civil war commences. I won't spoil it for you by giving away the ending, but you won't be disappointed.

In addition to an all-too-believable story, Bushman has wonderfully colorful characters- an 18 year old thrust into the international spotlight for being fired from tomorrow's Wal*Mart (First Wal) for substandard English skills; a hugely influential professor of political science at U. Chicago and his Congresswoman girlfriend; a Mexican techie who made the roads safe and efficient through automated controls, while enriching himself by providing automated escape routes for the Mexican druglords and their cartel; and an association of paramilitary survivalists who help the US government in its attempt the thwart the civil war. Along with a fabulous plot and character development, Bushman has enough science fiction to interest futurists and techies including advanced vehicles and military capability.

And if this weren't enough, there is an underlying theme of big government, politics, democracy, and capitalism that is thought-provoking and compelling.

A fun, fun, fun book that you won't put down.

Melting Point 2040 America Faces Divide Mike Bushman 9780988336902 Books Reviews

This book really is a page turner. The author does a great job with the development of the characters and draws you in to want to learn so much more. The book brings in such an interesting political look at the future of the United States and some very real possibilities of where we could be in 2040. The storyline of the book keeps you very engaged even if you do not have an in depth knowledge of the current political landscape. The characters of Juan and the Professor were most interesting to me. I enjoyed the courage and leadership of Juan's character. He seemed like he really cares for his cause and his people. The Chicago professor truly wants his students to be challenged and learn by stretching their minds. The thrill of the happenings of the illegal traffickers is heart pounding. The twist of the intense gaming community plot is even more thrilling. I can't wait for the sequel! Well done.
Great book, read and pass on to others. Makes you think... Check out Mike Bushman's other books.
Great follow up to Melting Point 2040 or as a stand alone read. Very imaginative and quick paced story of a scary future possibility created by an American divide and clash between values, cultural differences and political opportunism.
This book was the first political fiction I ever read, and I found it both engaging and thought provoking. The author chose the present tense to describe the not so distant future in which the story takes place, and by doing so grabs the reader’s attention by bringing a sense of reality and urgency to the events related.
In this provocative, cautionary tale, “Melting Point 2040,” author Michael Bushman depicts an America of the not-to-distant future. An American in which a politically activist Supreme Court has delivered a misguided decision with profound consequences. An America in which we have confused honoring our respective cultural heritages with maintaining a strict distinction of national origins at all cost. Where the concept of American society as a “melting pot” in which all newcomers are ultimately integrated into the mix adding richness to this wonderful stew has been lost, replaced by a sense of entitlement that immigrants can recreate the life they left behind and the rest of society must cater to that desire.

Weaving in historical precedents, the author points out the dangers of not building nations around a common tongue, where distinct ethnic and cultural enclaves develop, leading to regionalization, and sadly in many cases, civil wars and ethnic cleansing. While we do not yet perceive the threat, Bushman’s narrative is an early warning. Having just published a work of non-fiction on the consequences of our political dysfunction today, “American Moment,” this tale seems an apropos counterpoint of how things can devolve if we do not work together today to make government work for all of us. In addition to being thought-provoking, “Melting Point 2040,” is also a fun read.
Intriguing and thought provoking look at the near future. I enjoyed the discussions at U of C, and the analysis of majority/minority districts as well as the pro's/con's of the English language only policies currently in place or being debated. I thought the author did a decent job elucidating some of these topics without clearly making this a one sided argument (even if his viewpoints can probably be inferred through professor stark I would assume, and one or two somewhat caricatured students on the opposite side of the argument).

I thought there were some clever ideas in here (auctioning off space in national parks to pay down national debt, shape shifting cars) and I enjoyed the counter play between the events taking place and the U of C class room discussions on said events.

I also thought this was pretty original, at least from the standpoint that a lot of the near future books I've read have shown radical changes to society, whereas this book seems somewhat grounded in reality and interpolating what the u.s. may look like roughly 30 years from now.

Perhaps could have been streamlined a bit (the book sort of forgets/postpones to the next book? several sub plots such as the Chinese/First Wal business stuff, a salt mine in Detroit (quite a bit of lead up to this without much pay-off), a programmer tied to the cartel in mexico). The book also had a few moments of violence (Harvard massacre, race riots, car bombings) that I felt came and went too quickly and were only described/used in only a cursory fashion, which lessened the impact of the events in some fashion.
