B.T. Lowry must be an interesting fellow. After having read his book, I found myself having traversed desert planes, dreamscapes and ‘other’ dimensions. His vivid descriptions left me wishing that these were places I, too, could visit. The story was engaging, well-paced and deep (and I say that with the least valley-girl voice I can muster). I really enjoyed the book. The reason why I give it 4 stars, as oppose to 5, is because of his naming conventions. I found myself occasionally confused during the first third of the book. Once I got used to the names, it read much smoother, but I found it difficult to get into the book initially. I’m glad I didn’t give up, because I really enjoyed the story, the settings and the visceral way Lowry describes his world, as well as the many myths/legends peppered throughout the story.
A great debut novel… I definitely look forward to his next one.

It was difficult for me to keep up with the characters, regardless, the story is alluring. I was pulled into it, supposedly a fantasy, in the end, it was difficult to tell if I had read it or had actually experienced it within my own life. I highly recommend this book. It will definitely take the reader on an adventure.
This wonderful book took me by surprise, I must say. A friend had mentioned it to me, so I started reading it. Boy! I coudn't put it down! Everything about it is captivating the plot, the characters, the vivid dscriptions of nature and animal life, and these incredible insights into other dimensions altogether. I felt transported through some kind of initiatic journey. The author has managed to capture the inner life of these young people being tuned to otherwordly concerns while caring for their very real people, and presented a fascinating account of astral journeying, allowing us to peep into another reality, making it so real and tangible. I am looking for the next volume with eagerness!
Lowry's love of writing really shines forth in this beautifully written and insightful novel. Pulling from the ancient sources of wisdom that once served to guide the lives of our ancestors, Lowry so eloquently describes with vivid detail the external obstacles as well as internal battles two young mystics must face while on the brink of transformation. How greatly I appreciate the artist who utilizes their gift as a means to guide the aim of our soul to realizations and possibilities beyond this material world. This is a read that opens up our minds to the magical and subtle realms that we tap in our dreams. Yet he is also dishing a dose of the reality that this modern world faces without the vision and guidance of a more conscious and harmonious culture. I highly recommend you take this journey to the Overworld.
B.T. Lowry has very expertly portrayed a quintessential civilization with a fascinating culture full of devotion, purity, beauty and wisdom.
One would dream to live in such rich and sacred world which he so nicely painted (well, minus the famine, murderous animals, vicious outcast people and demoniac spirits that is!).
With all the adventure, magic, danger and thrill in this story I was provoked to read it all in one go. That being said, if you are one of those kind of people who have a hard time putting down good books then I recommend you read this on a weekend break or vacation so as to not disrupt your life at your work or in school. )
The end of the book leaves you hanging, dying to know what will happen next. I know this first book is just now coming out but still Mr. B.T. Lowry, hurry up and release the sequel!
This ground-breaking new book takes readers into the world of our ancestors and follows a young 'ayur', a spiritual leader-in-training, as she confronts bizarre changes that are happening in the natural world.
Yuvali is a student but she is called to use everything she has learned so far to go beyong what is familiar, and draw on her own inner knowing to figure out what to do to save her people.
I felt as if I was taking this journey with her. The writer takes us there with vividly described scenes. Heyowan is Yuvali's companion student in this adventure. Together they try to understand the profound meaning of what they discover. No two people were more loyal to each other, or more courageous.
You will be surprised and intrigued by what they encounter. This is a deeply imaginative book with a spiritual dimension. Out-of-body travels, ageless secrets, warriors and shifting between worlds, form part of the journey out of crisis. This is what waits for you in this wonderful story.
Fire from the Overworld is a complex story that follows the lives of three young protagonists as the structure of their world falls apart. The three main characters live in a rural town reminiscent of historic India. Yuvali and Héyowan are mystics and close friends who have grown up together, and Pradah is Héyowan’s older brother who will eventually take over for their father as chief of the village. The natural world has gone crazy--animals and men behave erratically, the crops are dying, and attack from roaming bands of tribeless warriors threatens the very existence of the village. It is a fight taking place on both the physical plane--Pradah is training to be a warrior to defend the village from attack--and the spiritual plane--Yuvali and Héyowan appeal to the very highest of the gods for rescue. But when the line between good and evil blur, the three children must grow up quickly and make adult choices that will change not only the course of village life, but perhaps change all the infinite worlds ruled by the gods.
Lowry’s writing style has beautiful passages of description that easily transport the reader to the kingdom of Raiya. Interspersed and inspired by mythology and oral storytelling, the book’s world has a richness that is the perfect backdrop to an epic story of good and evil. If you’re a fan of Tripathi’s Shiva Trilogy or are looking for a YA story similar to the atmosphere of Alexander's MG-level The Iron Ring, you would enjoy reading Fire from the Overworld.
