Dragons, treasure, old mysterious books with a strange family history recorded, hidden basements, and a splash of adventure! Obert Sky's Pillage was a home run for me.

Because Beck is fifteen years old, I wasn't sure whether this book was considered Young Adult or Juvenile. But considering the mildness of the story (no language, no sex, and very mild action involving the dragons), I would definitely consider this a Juvenile or Middle Grade novel. I also discovered it in the Juvenile section of the Library, so that confirmed my theory. It was a nice length for that age group, too.

I absolutely loved Beck, and his very teenagerish yet sensible outlook on adults and situations. He was hilarious. I laughed at his antics and at the way he could never just do as he was told. I really enjoyed his reactions as he slowly discovered his ability to make plants grow.

I loved that this book was perfectly clean. I would have zero qualms about handing it to a nine or ten year old child. Clean books with a fun story don't come along all that often, so when they do, I make sure to snap them up.

This was my first Obert Skye book, but you can bet I will be reading some more!

The Cover: I love the cover! It is completely engaging. The design is beautiful with the dragon's wings creating a very nice see-through effect against the moon. The use of color is fantastic. The artist used complimentary colors to draw your eye to the dragon's fiery mouth, then used the sliver of moon to draw your eye around the dragon to the wings, the title of the book, and back up to the top. Love it!

A very clever book. Its a good read. It left me curious about the next installments. Its hard to give it five stars as I would have loved a little more dot connecting, but understand that some of what I missed is probably intentional and will be fulfilled by completing the series.
This book was very interesting. Beck lived a tough life and now lives with his "uncle" that is a little kookoo but he finds a friend and a girl-friend. This was a good story filled with excitement and in the end a little love although the ending was very predictable i would still recommend a great story for anyone.
This book starts a little slow for me, but it finishes with a good bit of action and mystery. I love Obert Skye's writing style and can't wait to read the next in the series! Many twists and turns that keep you flipping the pages to find out what happens next!

I bought this for my son, who loveds Skye's "Leven Thumps" series. It must have been pretty darned great... he finished it in a day and asked "can you order the next one and did you order it yet and when will it be here and oh yay! it's here".
This is a fabulous story about a teen named Beck. Beck discovers he has a very special gift unique to his family he basically knows nothing about. That is until his mother dies and he's sent to live with his Uncle Aeron. He's moved to a place called Kingsplot which is almost like another planet. Upon arriving he's told to stay away from the backyard and there is no basement, but there is and it's buried! And what is the deal with the ivy and lettuce. Along the way Beck will make 2 friends, his only friends, Milo and Kate. But are they what they seem?

I too was hooked like other readers from the beginning. I found Beck quite funny and very likable. His sarcasm and wit make it hard to not like him. There were no boring parts of this book. The mystery in the book kept you going wanting more and when all is finally revealed its well worth the read. There are many surprises and twists to this plot. A definite page turner.

This is my first book by this author and I am very impressed. I recommend this book to everyone as its ideal for teens and adults.
Beck Phillips has had a rough life. His dad left him when he was too young to remember him, he moves around a lot, and there's something not quite right with his mom. But when his mother dies, he is taken to his uncle's, who he never knew existed. Things get even stranger as he's warned to keep out of locked rooms and away from the back of the mansion. Plants seem to obey his every command. And oh right, did I mention the dragons? Beck quickly discovers that his family has a not so pleasant history filled with a number of secrets that he is about to uncover. Secrets that could destroy many lives.

Having really enjoyed the Leven Thumps series, I decided to check out Pillage, book one of the new trilogy he is writing. (Well, this book is from 2008 and the second book, Choke, just came out, but relatively new, anyway.) There were some things I really liked about it. For one thing, because it was in first person, there was none (or almost none) of the annoying interruptions in the story to tell us facts of life that anyone with half a brain knows anyway. The downside to the first person narrative was that it came off as less sophisticated because the character was pretty juvenile.

The one thing he does not lack is the constant surprises and plot twists. I felt like I never quite knew where he was going with things. He does a good job of tricking you into thinking one thing and then showing you something else instead.

The biggest downside of the book for me was how long it took to really get to the heart of the story. It dragged on for far too long with day to day things, at least for my taste. I understand that he was discovering things and we were meant to learn with him, but really, couldn't he have learned a bit faster? A good example of this issue would be the fact that the characters often went exploring but decided to stop after only a little while to avoid being caught or to go to bed, etc. I would have preferred much more of it to happen all at once, that way the really exciting stuff could begin. But maybe that's just me.

I do think I'll check out Choke, though I can't imagine where exactly it will go from here. (I do have an inkling though and I'd guess it has something to do with plants.)
