I got this book because it is about puerperal fever which was the cause of my grandmother's death back in 1913. Dr. Semmelweis went against the conventional wisdom of his day to discover that the horrific death rate for the women coming to the hospital to deliver their babies was due entirely because the doctors were not washing their hands after doing postmortems in the morgue and before examining the live patients. They had no concept of the idea of germs and bacteria causing disease. Dr. Semmelweis was rejected for taking a stand to help his patients - even after proving his new theory with hard facts. This book took place in the mid 1800's and it makes me wonder how the doctors in America had not caught on to something that was discovered more than 100 years prior in Europe.

The Cry and the Covenant Morton Thompson 9780899667584 Books Reviews

We may have complaints about hospital births and find fault with the treatment of new mothers, but all who complain should take time to learn the history of modern obstetrics. It's worht reading and rereading.
I read this book at least 40 years ago--loved it the first time and loved it even more the second time. It is a novel, but it is an accurate telling of the life of the man who saved thousands of women by the simple act of washing hands. It is so sad that his contribution to medicine really was not recognized during his lifetime, but, thankfully, now it is! Wonderful book.
Love the book...Finally found this cherished oldie at a reasonable price.
This is one of the best books I've read in my lifetime. I read it first in my early teens and I has haunted and inspired me about what kind of a human and latter a physician to be. It is the story of Ignaz Semmelwiess, a 19th century physician-midwife who discvered the reason for childbed fever in an era when people knew nothing about contagion. But it's also about the influence a person can have if they have integrety to fight for their beliefs, and how much a person can accomplish with sufficient drive and passion. It's a beautifully written compelling book!
Awe-inspiring writing about a thoroughly engrossing subject, this biographical-historical novel is not surpassed. I read it right after his other novel, "Not as a Stranger", and never forgot this one as I did the other. Inspiring, and due for a reprint, this is one "biography" that can't be put down, and demonstrates the power of logical thinking and the ability to come to a conclusion not supported by the knowledge of the day--and hit it right on the head! This book has remained on my all-time inspirational list, still, after fifty years of medical practice.
I read this book 50 years ago while I was pregnant with my daughter. It was loaned to me by my cousin who was studying to be a nurse. It is amazing that something so simple as washing, could save so many lives and the arrogance of the elite doctors to poo poo
this simple solution to save lives was a disgrace. It kind of reminds me of our politicians that think they know what is best for us.
This book is a good lesson and I am giving it to my Granddaughter to read, since she is in nursing.
I have to tell you that this book was highly recommended to my Mom when she was in nursing school and it inspired me to also enter the medical field. It is the fascinating story of one of the founders of modern medicine and the germ theory. A great story and highly inspiring to anyone interested in pursuing a similar career. A must read for any future nurse or doctor for sure. it was a bit hard to find but I was thrilled to get this copy for my nephew in law who is entering school to become a physicians' assistant.
