I am a fan of all types of books and fantasy is one. Karen wrote a completely different book on fae and monsters. That leave the reader begging for more. At least me that is! I'm anticipating the release of the next book in this series adamantly.
Since this book is not R rated, at least so far, I plan on introducing it to my teen daughter. I think she will enjoy it as well.
Also kudos to the editors! I only found one misspellings. Today that is tremendous as almost every book I read has tons of spelling errors.

A Bond Of Venom And Magic The Guardians of The Goddess Volume 1 Karen Tomlinson 9781534838864 Books Reviews

Blurb The Wraith Lord is hunting; his prize, the key to unleashing darkness and Chaos upon the eight Kingdoms. For Diamond Gillon the war raging in the south seems a remote danger until her home is brutally attacked. Having lost everything she holds dear, Diamond is catapulted into a terrifying new world in which legendary beasts arise, magic is condemned and half blood fae, like her, have no rights. Despite her growing feelings for her savior, Commander Hugo Casimir, he remains a paradox – not only is he a heartless killer, he is owned by the cruel immortal fae queen; a queen who will murder her own people for magic.

Characters. I'll start with Diamond On the surface she appears like your typical weak human. But we learn she's half-fae, suffers from panic attacks, deals with a lot of loss in her young life ... and all these things makes her stronger. She is a bit naive (clueless), especially how others (Hugo and the Prince) feel about her and as a reader I was like, come on. You have to know that both guys like you. I also would have lumped in the BFF here but I don't know much about him. As the story progresses, so does Diamond in finding herself, what she wants and how to get it. I liked that.
Hugo He has some major issues to overcome and as the reader we don't know why he is the closed-off warrior. As the story unfolds, we do get glimpses in his past, his powers and relationship to the queen. He's pretty intense as a character.
BFF he doesn't appear much during the story and doesn't really have an intricate part in it. I often wondered why he was introduced b/c it did feel like the conversations they do have are for convenience and not of importance to move the plot forward.
Queen a character we don't get to really know until three quarters into the story line. But what we do know, we love to hate. Great villain.
Others As in any other epic story, there are a slew of characters to remember and at the beginning it is a bit difficult to remember who everyone is. Not only are there names, but new places, too (8 realms).

While I'm not fond of third person (I forget that in 3rd person the point of view can change), I did have to remind myself of that fact when I first started the series. But each character does have their own voice, style and thoughts so it is relatively easy to know who is talking. For me, the pacing was a bit slow at times and would have liked to see a more consistent steady pace.

So overall I really did enjoy the story.
Where to start? Really well written book. The characters are well developed...the relationships and the underlying conflicts pushed the plot along well. I still have shine unanswered questions, but hopefully they will be answered in the next book...such I hope comes soon. Definitely one of those books you can't put down!
Hugo's reluctance to acknowledge his emotions and the magnetic pull between him and Diamond was so great to read, but frustrating at the same time. Hugo has a strong demeanor, but when it comes to Diamond, it starts to slowly melt away. Which makes you even more in love with their bond as the story progresses.
I am part of Karen's Silver Guardians street team/reader group, and I was so excited to have been selected to be part of the blog tour. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has read the Air Awakens series by Elise Kova; Elementals series by Michelle Madow; Threats of Sky and Storm by Jennifer Ellision. If you've read those, you will enjoy this so much.
Ms. Tomlinson blew me away with her epic writing skills. I was hooked from the first page!!! From the epic action scenes to the well formed characters this is one epic read!!!
What a great book to start a new fantasy series. A different take on the usual. It had it all - mystery, a quest, heartbroken heroine, a savior or worse enemy, and Fae and Monsters galore. I thought the book well written and the story just sucks you in. Once started, I had to finish it to see what happened next. A few twists and monsters from old that were assumed extinct show up as well. How could i resist reading it. I was not disappointed.
I have always been an elitist when it came to sci fi/fantasy and have believed that only those such as Tolkien, Frank Herbert and Robert Heinlien, or Anne Mcaffrey, Melanie Rawn and Mercedes Lackey would ever be good enough for me. And while not quite there yet, I'm happy to say I've found a serious "could be" in Karen Tomlinson.

Creating a believable world complete with peoples, places, language and beliefs has to be truly a difficult thing. For me it would be near impossible. Karen Tomlinson has begun to do so in her first book of the Goddess and the Guardians in a very entertaining way. I think it has a ways to go before it becomes a world I can see as something real and believable, but it is a tremendous start. I found I had a more difficult time putting it down than I anticipated at the beginning. Now I am anxious to finish this review so I can begin book 2.!

My only reason for a rating of 4 stars rather than 5 is that I feel she needs to pare down the repetition of emotions that both Hugo and Diamond express. It gets monotonous enough that I find myself skipping parts because of it. I'm hoping book 2 gets that a little more under control. I really don't like skipping parts of any book.

Still, very well done!
This book was Amazing. I instantly fell in love with Diamond and Hugo. Although I did find myself cursing Hugo out in my head a few times, his growing love for Diamond was undeniable. I liked this book mainly because of Diamond. She was everything I hoped for in a character. She was instantly an outsider because of her status as a half-blood but she was SOOO likable amongst those around her including me (the reader). I can not wait for the second book. Just can't wait.
